Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico

Is Puerto Rico a state or not? For someone who is semi-educated for some reason I am still always confused about this. According to my latest Google search there has been discussion but it is still not a state. The administrative assistant in my office is from Puerto Rico and she is always raving about the island! I was very excited to find out that my cruise ship was departing from San Juan. Hurricane Maria struck the island in 2017 and unfortunately there was still reminisce upon my arrival in 2020.

What you need to know:

Getting to San Juan: We live in Massachusetts. With that said there are many options when flying out. We flew out from Hartford CT. This is actually the closest airport to my parents house, they live in Western MA.

  • We flew on Spirit Airline- It is about a 4 hour direct flight. (We had a layover in Florida which turned into a delay.) Luckily we had a hotel at the airport in San Juan.
  • Flying from Puerto to Boston we flew JetBlue. They are my favorite airline. I’m not sure if it is the snacks or the extra leg room for everyone. Even at 5’ 2’’ that extra leg room feels like winning the lottery!
  • I always check Kayak.com for flights. (Southwest is not on Kayak)

Where to Stay:

  • The San Juan Airport Hotel: I can’t say enough good things about this hotel! Our flight arrived very late and this was just amazing! The hotel is actually connected to the airport. It is within walking distance from the airport! No Uber, cab or rental car needed!
  • The Condado Plaza Hilton: If you’re looking for amenities this the the place to stay! Ocean views, pools, bars and restaurants. This is not an all inclusive but has all the bells and is very close to the cruise port!

What to eat:

  • The classic Puerto Rican meal: Chicken, rice and beans! I also make an effort to eat the local food! Sea food is also fresh, Puerto Rico is an island!

What to do:

  • The I Love Puerto Rico sign: Perfect for your Instagram photo opt! The address is: 100 Blvr. Saint John, San Juan. It is located on the docks near the cruise ships. Note: The cruise ships leave from both sides of the dock, your ship might not be near this.
  • Catch a sunset or sunrise: The hotels on the beach are the perfect location for this! Also if you have a hotel with a balcony you can grab a drink and seat and watch this!
  • Runners and walkers: Make sure to bring your camera. There is plenty of street art of flowers and insects on the ground made of colorful stones! This is located on the streets toward the cruise ship docks.
