Cap City Half Marathon: As it is on my bucket list to run a race in each state and earn a medal for my 50 states medal holder, that means Ohio is on the list! The Cap City Half Marathon was my selection for an Ohio race as it happened to be in the city of which my friend lives.
Yes it is on the expensive side for a race but well worth it. My flight arrived at 12:30AM the day of the race, so I was unable to pick up my bib number. But I was able to send an email to the race director to have a friend pick up my packet. The packet contained a drawstring backpack, some flyers for upcoming races and a technical shirt along with a bib number. There is packet pick up the morning of the race but please be sure to email ahead of time. The website does state no packet pick up day of. There is limited parking near the race. I would recommend taking a Lyft or Uber to the race. When checking your gear I DON’T recommend using the bag provided to you by the race. Each participant was given a drawstring bag. It was of good quality and I will use it again but there were hundreds of the same bag checked, making it difficult for the volunteers to find the bag at the end.
It is very busy at the start of the race, you are in your corral well before the start of the race, making a warm up difficult. The sidewalks are crowded surrounding the start area. The race was mostly flat, no real hills, a few inclines. There was a plethora of musicians scattered about the race course along with numerous water and gel stops. I was well entertained with the music along the course.
There is photography along the course in a few locations. The best part is the photos are FREE. You will receive an email and can download the photos from the email. And I know you love free stuff, who doesn’t? So make sure you check your email for a few days following the race. If you would like them printed you can order them for a fee. My recommendation would be to download and sent to CVS for printing, it is more cost effective. The course is well marked and has literally thousands of runners making it difficult to get lost.
Once you hit the finish line the real party starts, hands down best after party! Directly after the finish line you are funneled onto the green where the after party is. There are tearaways at the bottom of the bib for a slice of pizza, a margarita, spiked seltzer and a beer specifically brewed for the race in a commemorative can. There was also live music being played. On the green there are vendors with free giveaways and a Cap City 3D sign for your Instagram worthy photo. Now for what you really care about the shirts are Brooks and technical fabric and the finishers medal have weight to them. I would definitely recommend adding this race to your calendar. If a half marathon is too much for you, there is a 10k or 5k option as well.
Be sure to Uber or Lyft in, use your own bag for bag check, check out the after party and eagerly await the email of your race photos!!
